Pre-Season Boat Checklist for Lake Pleasant, Roosevelt & the Salt River Lakes

Nothing kills the first lake weekend of the season faster than a boat that won't cooperate. Whether you're headed to Lake Pleasant, Lake Roosevelt, Saguaro, Canyon, or Bartlett, running through a pre-season checklist beats finding out about a problem at the ramp with a full parking lot behind you.

Engine

  • Oil and filter — if it's been a season since the last change, do it before, not after, the first hard run.
  • Fuel system — check for degraded fuel if the boat has been sitting for an extended period; add fresh fuel and a stabilizer if needed.
  • Impeller and cooling system — a weak or cracked impeller is one of the most common causes of overheating, and it's cheap insurance to check before the season, not during it.
  • Belts and hoses — look for cracking, fraying, or soft spots. Desert heat is hard on rubber components.

Battery and electrical

  • Battery test — don't assume a battery that held a charge last season is still good. Heat degrades marine batteries faster than milder climates.
  • Terminal check — clean any corrosion and confirm tight connections.
  • Bilge pump and lights — test that both work before you're relying on them on the water.

Trailer

  • Wheel bearings — repack if it's been a season or more, especially if you launch at boat ramps regularly (ramp dunking accelerates bearing wear).
  • Tires — check tread and look for dry rot or sidewall cracking from sitting in the sun.
  • Lights and wiring — confirm brake lights, turn signals, and running lights all work before towing to the lake.
  • Brakes — if your trailer has surge or electric brakes, confirm they're functioning correctly.

Hull and safety gear

  • Hull inspection — check for any damage from the last season, especially around the drive unit or lower gear case.
  • Safety gear — confirm life jackets, fire extinguisher, and signaling devices are all present and not expired.
  • Registration — make sure your registration and any required decals are current before you launch.

Lake-specific notes

Lake Pleasant and Roosevelt see the heaviest weekend traffic in the Valley — a breakdown at the ramp during peak hours is more than just inconvenient. Canyon Lake's more limited nearby services make it worth double-checking everything before you leave, since a mobile repair may take longer to reach you than at a closer lake.

Skip the guesswork

If it's been months since your boat ran, or you're not confident checking all of this yourself, a mobile pre-season visit covers the full list in one appointment — request a quote and we'll get your boat ready before your first trip out.
